Hundreds of volunteers rallied together through Facebook and Twitter to help clean up the mess early the next morning after the riot in Vancouver.

On Saturday morning, The Bay treated those volunteers with a free pancake breakfast to say "thank you".

These were the most emotionally difficult images that I have ever worked on. I was devastated to see our beautiful city in such chaos.

Stanley Park is named for Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada in 1888 when the park was officially opened.

The Stanley Cup, notably the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, was donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley. He purchased the trophy for 10 Guineas ($50.00 at that time) to be presented to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada." The first team ever awarded the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in 1893.

While in Toronto, a group of friends came by on my day off and grabbed me for a trip to the abandoned paper mill in Georgetown. I had just finished an all night 14 hour shift and had been awake for over 24 hours by the time we got there. In addition to this, I had to take a motion sickness pill to counter the effects of being a car passenger for the long ride. My head felt like it was encased in sand. :P

When we reached the mill, we slipped through a hole in the fence to begin our exploration. It was a fascinating visit!

Things related to pirates bring out the romance in some people... ;)

A port-to-port tall ship race in Toronto had a number of tall ships arrive to the waterfront. Canada Day happened to coincide with this event so there were quite a few ships to admire.

I was working or away during the majority of the chaos in Downtown Toronto. These photographs were all taken when all the delegates were leaving. I heard that there were still a number of protesters marching through the streets though.

This was a portraiture idea of Nima that I had in my head for quite a while. I finally presented my concept to him to see if he would be interested...

Nima: "You're always trying to get me into the woods alone!"
Me: "So you're in?"
Nima: "Yes."

Winds and a storm almost 10 days ago ended with 4 boats washed up onto Kitsilano Beach. One of the boats shortly floated back to sea and another was smashed beyond recovery. A fifth one was destroyed after running into some rocks at nearby Vanier Park.

Some of these boats broke free of their moorings, some others were "squatter boats". Moorage in the Vancouver Lower Mainland is hard to come by and almost impossible find. Aside from the long waiting lists, it is also very expensive. While some of the boat squatters live on what can be defined as "barges" at best, many others are just unable to obtain proper moorage because of this problem.

It has been over a week since the boats were beached. I heard that the boats were still there and the city was threatening to charge the owners if they did not remove their boats from the sand.

Great Blue Herons in B.C. are feeling the pressure of human population growth. Herons are very sensitive to activity near their nests, in particular early in the nesting season. Though they can get used to day-to-day human activity, novel noises (e.g. sudden blasts of horns or chain saws) can cause the birds leave their nests, making the young vulnerable to predators such as eagles. If the noise persists, it’s possible that colonies will abandon their site completely.

We all just enjoyed an amazing show from Mother Nature tonight. After weeks without rain, a thunderstorm resulted in a breathtaking sunset in Vancouver. The entire city was bathed in a warm orange glow. The lightning and thunder later on upstaged the fireworks we had. Amazing.
