A good friend of mine was assaulted by her live-in boyfriend during the weekend. She was finally able to go to work yesterday. This guy has a drinking problem and they have broken up every weekend, it seems, and gotten back together the next day. I never got any good vibes from him and I never felt comfortable to have any conversations with him.
This guy is an aspiring actor, mainly stage, and he has quite an ego. I kept subtlely suggesting to my friend that she could do better. From the way he treated her by being controlling, flirting with other women in her presence or without, getting drunk, pouting and generally being intolerable whenever he didn't get his way... I couldn't see a future for her with him. However, since they have moved in together just 3 months ago, she didn't want to move again and attempted to try and work things out.
When she finally had enough, her friends helped her move out. It was when she returned for the rest of her belongings, she saw him there with a female friend of his. As soon as they were alone, he attacked her. The next day, my friend got a call from the crisis centre. Apparently, this jerk wanted to cover his actions and repurted that he had stopped her from killing herself because of her depression. Her bruises were a result of a struggle that developed. He actually wanted to make himself look like a hero.
This was it. My friend approached the police and the dick was taken into custody. He has been ordered to stay away from my friend and not to attempt to communicate with her in any way. The police are going to charge him. Even though my friend has recommended that he get help because she still has feelings for him in some strange way, she has also agreed to press charges. She found out that he had a history of abusing his partners and she wanted to put an end to it if she can.
My friend is currently staying with two big male friends who own a big dog. She should be safe. Nesha wants to get this idiot beat-up to show him what his girlfriends/women go through. She has very strong feelings about such situations and was very passionate in her reaction when she heard about this.
At first, I believed revenge by having him pummelled wasn't the answer. It wouldn't solve anything and would likely get him meaner. Any satisfaction would likely be short-lived. I believed that he truly needs help but I doubt that he would even admit he has a problem, especially a drinking problem which appears to be the cause of all this. As optimistic as I usually am, I don't believe he'll change... at least not any time soon.
It just angers me that this sort of thing happens because I can't fathom people having the mentality to do this and also because there isn't much that can easily be done about it.
I am glad that my friend has made the decision to leave him. She'll need some time to get things back together and into better perspective.
