The Batcave
Jul. 12th, 2003 09:54 amMannn... Calgary is sure HOT right now. It's around 28C. And I probably have at least a baker's dozen of mosquito bites... little buggers...
Yesterday, Nesha treated me and her dad for some spelunking. That was really fun! We did a 25 minute hike through a mosquito-infested trail. The pack full of caving equipment for the three of us in addition to my not-yet-acclimatization to the high altitude knocked me over for some dizziness and nausea. Nesha's dad, Don, carried the heavy pack the other quarter of the way to the cave entrance. I was perfectly fine once the heavy load came off.
After we put on all our gear, we entered a locked gate into the entrance. This was it. We climbed down into a narrow passage and looked around in the dark. This was great! We saw some animal bones that were a few thousand years old. Further on, after climbing deeper into the passages, we came to a very tight and vertical passage. This one we went in head-first and contorted our bodies around the curves. Nesha had insisted that I carry a fanny pack with water when we started and this I crushed trying to squeeze through the "chute". The bottler popped open and water gushed out all over me. Luckily, I was wearing some stay-dry clothing underneath so only my overalls were soaked. And we didn't even end up drinking any water until we got out. Poor Don was behind me so he had to crawl through the puddles of water I created.The cave was cool, around a constant 5C year-round.
After some time, we got out by doing some climbing along the way. This part was as fun as crawling and diving head first through the tunnels. Back outside, we got a feel of the hot air. The exploration lasted over 2 hours, a half hour longer than usual, and I/we definately had a fantastic experience.
Too bad I never came across any bats.
